Catholic Education in the Classical Charlotte Mason tradition.
Educating the Whole Child for Heaven.

Cycled Subjects
These four subjects are assigned by the calendar year rather than each child's grade. Often families will study these topics together during morning time or other family time. That choice is up to you.
Composer Study
In a Charlotte Mason education, composer study introduces children to the works of great composers through regular listening. Each term, students focus on one composer and become familiar with several of his pieces simply by hearing them often. Families are encouraged to play these pieces during relaxed times at home—such as meals, tea, or quiet evenings—so the music becomes familiar and naturally enjoyed together. Over time, children begin to recognize the music and associate it with the composer, developing musical memory and an appreciation for beautiful music.

Picture Study
In a Charlotte Mason education, picture study introduces children to the works of great artists through careful observation. Each term, students focus on one artist and become familiar with several of his paintings by studying them closely and revisiting them regularly. Families are encouraged to hang prints of the artwork in the home so they can be seen often and naturally become familiar. Over time, children begin to recognize the artist’s style and remember individual works, developing attention and an appreciation for great art.

Hymns
Each month features a hymn for families to learn and sing together. These are carefully chosen from the Church’s rich musical heritage and reflect the reverence and beauty of traditional Catholic worship.
Selections are arranged to match the liturgical seasons, allowing the music in the home to echo the rhythm of the Church year. Spending a full month with each hymn gives families time to learn the melody and words well, so that it can be sung naturally during prayers, family devotions, and throughout the season it reflects.

Shakespeare
Shakespeare study introduces children to the richness of the language, stories, and characters of the Bard's many ffamous plays. Students read (and act out) one play per term. Form 1 (Years 1-3) read beautifully written retellings that allow them to appreciate the story for their younger minds. Form 2+ read the actual plays.
Additionally, shorter excerpts are selected for recitations to help children internalize the rhythm, vocabulary, and expression of the text. Recitation encourages careful attention to meaning, tone, and language, while reading the plays aloud brings the characters and story to life. Over time, this practice develops both an appreciation for Shakespeare’s genius and a facility with expressive language that supports reading, writing, and oratory skills. Families are often encouraged to enjoy passages together, making the plays a natural part of conversation and shared learning at home.
VeV recommends Shakespeare Stories by Leon Garfield for Form 1 students. Form 2+ we recommend Wordsworth Classics editions, but any unabridged edition will do, though it is strongly recommended that if you have multiple students reading that everyone has the same edition for ease of following along.
